5 MORE Tips to Make Your Job Search Fun and More Effective – PART 2
TIP #6 Network
Go to networking events with your resume and business cards in hand, and treat the event like a series of mini interviews. These can include local VMA meetings, NAVC, WVC conferences.
Before you go, have an answer for the question, “What do you do?”
For example, “I’m a veterinarian” is a label. “Do” is the verb.
When someone asks what you do, they’re really are asking, “What problems do you solve?”
If I go to a networking event and say I am a recruiter and a career/life coach, they may or may not remember me. But if I say, “I’m passionate about teaching veterinarians the new rules of job search so they can find the perfect job easier and faster,” they will remember me.
“I am all about helping people understand the right way to look for work so it’s less stressful and more fun and they get better results faster,” I’m always asked, “Really, how do you do that?” This leads to further conversation and connection.
If you want to stand out from the crowd and be memorable, tell them what problems you solve and do it with passion and enthusiasm.
TIP #7 Create Relationships
Every time you go to a veterinary conference have a goal of making 10 new contacts. This will help you keep in touch with who know the pulse of veterinary medicine. Email them when you get home and appreciate the conversation you had with them.
Join your local veterinarian associations, volunteer at your state VMA. This is how you keep your relationships and pipe line full.
TIP #8 Conduct Information Interviews
Focus on gathering information instead of rushing to get a job offer. Many contacts will be more receptive to sharing knowledge rather than discussing an immediate position. What do they look for in a candidate? What are the qualities they have found to be the most important in their top veterinarians?
TIP #9 Multiply Your Options
Broaden your vision.
Having multiple job leads will help you stay motivated and make sounder decisions.
TIP #10 Volunteer Your Services
Community service is an excellent way to broaden your network and discover job leads.
- Contact charities that interest you and mingle with the staff, board, and other volunteers.
- Volunteer at state, local DVM organizations
